Training in clinical pathways and communication for RACFS

RACF nursing staff from across Brisbane North were invited to participate in training to enhance clinical knowledge and skills in three clinical pathways with the aim to improve care of residents and build confidence in communicating with care providers. This training supports the delivery of Standard 3 under the Aged Care Quality Standards.

A nurse practitioner with expertise in residential aged care will delivered online training comprising of:

• 3 x training sessions around three clinical pathways
• 1 x group clinical coaching session sharing peer learnings and embedding skills.

Clinical pathways:

The three selected clinical pathways were:

• recognition of a deteriorating resident
• management of residents with unstable vital signs
• end of life management.

Learning outcomes:

Following completion of the educational sessions and clinical coaching session nursing staff should be able to:

• recognise early signs of clinical deterioration and how to use critical thinking when interpreting vital sign observations
• manage acutely unwell residents, with a focus on infectious processes, heart failure, and other common conditions encountered in the routine care of residents
• implement supportive care for a resident in the terminal phase of their life
• understand and apply communication techniques working alongside other health professionals while utilising clinical pathways.
